One way of memorising collocations or set expressions is to record them by key word. For example, you could do this using verbs such as:
- MAKE: 'make an effort', 'make an argument', 'make progress' etc.
- COME: 'come to a decision', 'come to a compromise', 'come to a standstill' etc.
- PAY: 'pay your respects', 'pay a fine', 'pay somebody a compliment' etc.
